Mand is only spoken by eight people, all living in the village of Atemble. Or rather, when I last visited Atemble in 2014, there were eight fluent Mand speakers left. Over the course of two visits, in 2012 and 2014, I was able to record all of them. Here they are.
Mand never had many speakers, since it was only ever spoken in Atemble. This means that it was always under pressure from nearby languages, like Aren and Nend. But the introduction of Tok Pisin has sped up language shift. Another factor may have been the fact that colonial contact started earlier here than in most places: a Catholic mission was founded in Atemble in the early 20th century.
